COVER
SHOT: Derek Malcolm, lost lane choice and lost in the
finals of one of the big races in Michigan |
BITS
FROM THE PITS: MAY 28/18 *There
was lots of talk on opening weekend at Luskville Dragway about the
cancellation of the Super Tour Race at Quebec City, well it is official now
the event has been cancelled to do legal problems with the track and the people
that live in the surrounding area.
The
track is being forced to keep noise levels below a certain amount, and this
means that all cars must run mufflers, so doesn't work for what we do. Jacque
Labelle tired hard to get a exception for our race but with a law suit still
standing was unable to do so. We have cancelled the event, but will make the
Saturday only of the Bracket Finals at I car a points race as well as the two
days at Napierville, and the four days at Luskville Dragway. This is very
disappointing for many including myself who where looking forward to going too
Point Rouge for the first time ever. But it is also very much with what I have
been warning people about, the loss of our race tracks, and how everyone has to
fight to keep theirs alive.
*Just
a quick reminder we are open at Luskville Dragway on June 2 for test and
tune and a foot brake race that we will allow anyone to enter, as well as a cruise night and then we are back on June 9-10 with
another two day event as well as a cruise night on Saturday Night. The
weather man has been dreadful so far this season, lets hope that its not a
repeat of last summer's racing season. With four rainouts out of the first
six weekends you can easily see what operators have too deal with in this
business.
*Everyone know s
how we hate to give in too the weather, and this past Saturday was a prime
example of that, as once again this season rain and a forecast for rain was what
we where met with on Saturday morning. However even though it was skelton staff
the drying process started as the radar indicated we might just be able to get
the Autovation Inc. Cruise Night in. And g et
it in we did, no it was not a good turnout, however Derek Lamoureux did come out
with his car and a bunch of friends and quickly pointed out how great the place
looked, and how pleased he was that we did just throw in the towel. So not all
the time is it just about how many come through the gate, although that is what
pays the bills, keeping the advertisers interest at heart is also very
important. After seeing the new grand stand signage Derek said he will have a
new sign ready to go up very soon. One of the cars that did make it out for the
first time this summer was the new Outlaw ride for Steph and Perry Seccaspina.
The little twin turbo Mustang laid down some big time mile an hour runs
indicating a great traction day this car could just be the one to watch.

TIM FEARREY WITH HELP FROM D&D THRASH HARD TO BE READY:
MAY 28/18
If you read our article last week about those
that pull out all the stops to be ready for opening weekend, then this story
is the perfect follow up story. As we wrote last year, Tim Fearrey h as
teamed up with Phil VanNoppen of D&D Performance in an effort to give oldest
Daughter Grace VanNoppen some seat time in Semi Pro while finishing up her
last season in Jr. Dragster. So it was also decided to have some safety up
grades to Tim's Mustang so plans where laid out to sent it off to MF
Chassisworks to have a new cage as well as other items done. But like all
good plans timing doesn't always go the way you want and even with Andrew at
MF doing everything he could to be on time, car arrived back at D&D with
only days to go before the May 19-20 opening points weekend would be on us.
Well it was late night thrashes and early morning coffee's but they got er
done in time for opening day, in fact early enough to even get some testing
in Friday evening prior to opening Day. Hats off too D&D Performance, MF
Chassisworks, and of course Tim Fearrey, who is one of those that cares
about the future of our sport. |
J&S COLLISION LIKES THI NGS
TO LOOK GOOD, AND WILL REWARD THOSE THAT DO:
If you have ever seen any of the race cars that
Jamie & Sheila Tupper have ever owned, you will know what I mean when I say
they have nice stuff. If you have ever seen any of the work that comes out
of the J&S Collision shop in Tilsonburg, Ontario you will also
understand what I mean whe n
I say they do good stuff. Yes these are folks who believe cars need to look
good whether its your daily runner, or the runner you race on the weekends.
So with that in Mind we are pleased to announce that we will be presenting
one lucky winner at each Napa Auto Parts Race, with a J&S Collision Best
Appearing Award. This will start with our first race in Elliott Lake July
13-14-15, Luskville Dragway August 2-3-4-5, Wawa August 10-11-12, Luskville
Dragway Sept 1-2-3, and I-Car Sept 21-22=23. Jamie and Sheila Tupper have
long been supporters of Luskville Dragway and the Napa Auto Parts Tour, both
in person and in advertising, and for that we can not thank them enough. |
LOCALS DO WELL
AT FIRST EVER MIDWEST BIG BUCKS RACE: MAY 28/18
It would take forever to list all of the Canadians who
headed to Martin Michigan and US 131 Dr agway
for the first ever SFG big dollar bracket race, but they where noticed right
from the word go. I have always touted just how good the racers from Luskville
Dragway, Shannonville Dragway, The Napa tour and the Super Tour are, and every
time they venture out they prove me right. Whether it be Troy Davis winning the
$10,000 big bucks at Cicero two years ago, as well as being in the finals the
second day, or Jay Beaulieu and Joel Lapierre winning big bucks races last year
in Montgomery, where ever our guys go they do well. And that was proven again
this past weekend as Darren Frasso went to the finals in the Thursday race at US
131 and Derek Malcolm got down to 8 cars in the Wednesday Race and understand
this is with over 500 cars competing.
 Friday saw
$50,000. up for grabs for the winner of Super Pro and here too Canadians had a
impact with a number of drivers going too the later rounds. Richard Arnold a
regular on the Super Tour got down to 10 cars in this race making for what
should have been good pay day. Not to be outdone, Luskville Dragway's very own
Mike Ogilvie won the Best Burnout Contest as he made his blown dragster do a
"TOP FUEL LIKE BURNOUT".
Saturday and the Big One, 125,000. to win Super
Pro and you can bet the nerves will come to the top in this one. And whether it
was nerves or what, but most of the Canadians did not fare well and only Joel
Lapierre was left when it got down to serious money in the big one. But here too
another Canadians day came to and end at 10 cars, which was a very , very good
showing, well done Joel. Now for some early exciting Canadians it was time to
get in on a high roller race, and here Richard Arnold and Derek Malcolm did well
with Richard going out at 16 cars and Derek going all the way to the finals. So
this made for two Canadians so far in a field of 600 cars going to the finals
with Sunday yet to come. But could Derek give the Canadians their first win, and
the answer came at 1.00 am Sunday morning when Derek, Like Darren Frasso had to
settle for runner up spot, but GOOD JOB Derek, and just imagine it wasn't at
Luskville!
Sunday was the final day, and the final day for a victory for
one of the Canadians, could it happen. Well the answer too that question was
almost a yes as a number of the boys went plenty of rounds, including Jamie
Bridge on the dragster side and Jason Chatwood on the Door side who both got
down to round 9. This showing of these two dozen Canadian drivers that are all
connected to Luskville Dragway one way or another was just amazing in a field of
close to 600 cars. Pretty sure everyone will go back in 2019 and yeah there
might be a couple new ones as well. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL. |
BITS
FROM THE PITS: MAY 21/18 *Opening day came up
on us pretty fast, but don't think for a minute that things slow down one little
bit, just ask the large group of Luskville Dragway racers who are heading to US
131 Dragway, in Martin, Michigan Tuesday for a HUGE big dollar race. Yes many of our
regulars including, Derek Malcolm, Kyle Jessup, Ogilvie Motorsports, Louis
Gagne, Terry Miron, Ed Lapointe, Brandon Barker and many more, but you get the
idea we will be well represented. The racing starts on Wednesday and the boys of
summer have been told to keep us up dated. It is being live streamed and we will
keep you posted on our Facebook page of that. GOOD LUCK GUYS. And then its right
back home and we are all off to Point Rouge for the first event in the Canadian
Bracket Super Tour, yes it has started and it won't slow down until October.

*No the weather man did not cooperate,
but after last season (10 rain outs) everyone was ready for what ever was thrown
at them, and they came out on top for Malcolm Carpentry opening weekend 2018.
Rain once again played a major part of another race weekend at Luskville
Dragway, but this time I think one can safely say Luskville Dragway was the
winner. With a record turnout of race cars for an opening weekend, staff, racers
and fans did not let the weather man win, and too the very contrary, it was
everyone else that was the winners for sure. All races complete, all racers
paid, and by all accounts everyone had a good time. I can not thank those that
came enough, as it was because of the racers who made it too opening weekend
that made it a success. They came from as far away as Manitoulin Island, Spanish
River, Quebec City, Belleville and of course all of our regular supporters who
have stuck by Luskville Dragway like glue, THANK YO U.
With support like that we will keep Luskville Dragway going and growing.
*Thought this was a pretty cool
picture that track photographer John Chambers caught on Sunday, Kyle Jessup of
Precision Concrete sitting in the new grand stand with his wife to be Meagan.
Sitting in front of the Malcolm Carpentry Advertising sign, this points out our
great advertisers as well as our great family atmosphere at Luskville Dragway. |
IT WASN'T
PRETTY BUT WE GOT IT DONE: MAY 21/2018
Although it was not pretty and there was a certain amount of sadness amongst the
drivers come Sunday Morning, we managed
to get two days of racing in for the Malcolm Carpentry Opening Weekend 2018.
With the weatherman calling for rain Saturday we pretty much new we wouldn't get
it all in, but after a great time trial Friday Night under super weather, everyone
did what they could to get as much done as possible with day one race. But by 1
p.m. things were called and the coolers where opened. So that meant that Sunday
would once again like many times in the past
be a double header. But early Sunday
morning we also informed that Ed Wellwood a long time drag racer from Sault St
Marie had passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, from a heart attack, so the racing
family came too the line with heavy hearts on every run. After two time
trials for all, things got back into high gear with the completion of Saturdays
program. Jr. Dragster which had a good field for opening weekend boiled down
too, Ryan Clarmo and Julien Laporte with Mr. Laporte picking up the first win of
the season. Semi Pro which had a great turnout thanks to many out of town
people saw a number of surprise wins in the early rounds which set things up for
a great eliminator as things went along. In the finals Mike Reynolds put his 77
Don Hardy
Vega into the winners circle taking out Mark Thompson with a better reaction
time. The largest turnout of Super Pro Cars for any opening weekend had
management smiling in big fashion for most of the weekend. A number of racers who
had never made it out for opening weekend were present as most of them where
also heading to Michigan the next weekend, so it was important to have things
right. With things moving along it was 2 p.m. before Ashley Ogilvie and Brandon
Barker came to the lanes for the finals. Brandon was bang on the tree with his
reaction time giving him room at the stripe to take the win over young Ashley. Ok so on to race
two and once again Julien Laporte would make his way back to the finals, where he and
Josh Shields would do battle for the trophy. But some things never change
and for Julien
he was very happy to see that, as he picked up his second win of
the weekend and his second trophy. In Semi Pro final Pat Glover from Spanish River
surprised everyone including Mark Thompson who had to settle for runner both
days with a second place finish once again. For Pat it was a rewarding weekend as he had lots of his friends with him
and they all joined him in the winners circle. The Super Pro race was a great
one and the Sunday Portion of the event saw even more cars come through the
gate. But heading into the Finals it was Last years Super Pro Track Champion
Derek Malcolm who was one half of the Finals and Brandon Barker for the second
time as well, and like Julien Laporte Brandon would take the win light when a
misstep on the starting line saw Malcolm mess up his staging, tripping the red
light which gave Brandon the win light. One of things I would very much like to
point out, and was pointed out by all racers in attendance, and that was the
incredible traction that was there for the racers and they all stated that. And
this was done with out Million Dollar Track drags, and thousand dollars
sprayers, congratulations to all responsible.
 Mike
Reynolds was the big Mulligan race winner. |
 Julien
Laporte double up his wins with both Sat. & Sun. |
 Pat Glover
made all Northern racers happy with his big win. |

PARA PERFORMANCE THE OFFICIAL SPEED SHOP OF
LUSKVILLE DRAGWAY : MAY 21/18
In a day and
age when speed shops are becoming a thing of the past it is nice to see that
one of them is not just surviving but it is getting bigger and better as the
years go by. Its a tuff deal for independent speed shops, as the times
changed and many people starting supporting on line shopping when it came to
high performance, which was a deaf nail for many, but not Para Performance
of Montreal which is still going strong. It was only a little while ago that
we talked about Ottawa's oldest running speed shop "Young's Speed Shop"
closing, so it is great to here that Para Performance is doing well. Doing
well enough, that the owners have once again thrown their support behind
Luskville Dragway and the 2018 season. Owned François Paradis and the Anger
twins Fred and Frank, it is quick to
see that this is a racers speed shop to say the least. Para carries a complete
supply of high perf ormance products, and if they don't have it on their shelves
they can get it the next day. They are also a supplier of Abruzzi Racing
Transmission and once again in a day and age when our Canadian Dollar is not
well, this is the place to shop. They can also get you what ever size and type
of drag slick you want and have been doing so for a number of this area's drag
racers. Many years ago there was many speed shops, many of them have bought
advertising at Luskville Dragway over those years, but today Para Performance is
one of the few that is around and is growing, so please remember to support
those that support us. You can find out more about Para Performance by clicking
on their Logo in our advertisers page.

BITS
FROM THE PITS: MAY 14/18 *So its finally here,
Malcolm Carpentry Opening weekend for the Points Series, Precision Concrete
Mulligan Saturday, Busters Bar Cruise Night Saturday Night, and Back to the Bar
on Sunday, WOW lots happening May 18-19-20. Something's to keep in mind, Both
Gates will be open Friday Morning, so enter accordingly what fits where you
park, We will have some registration on Friday and will announce that. We will
also be running a test and tune Friday Night cost is $30. car and driver no
extra charge for crew members that are going to be there for the weekend. The
registration for test and tune will take place in the tower and must be done before going on the
track. THE
TRACK WILL BE SPRAYED. As most know this is a weekend that we juggle things
around on Friday Night so we can attend our granddaughter's dance recital, like
years past. So we will register who we can on Friday and then the rest on
Saturday early morning like past years, as we will start early as well. The Friday night test and tune is open to any
and all street cars that want to come out and join in, cost is $30. car and
driver and $5.00 for spectators.
*As we told
you a while ago we where involved with Clarmo Auto Repair in putting together a
giv e away package involving Luskville Dragway and Jamie & Sherri Clarmo's Malibu
Semi Pro Car, This was to raise money for a good cause. Well we can tell you
that the winner paid $1400. for a weekend at Luskville Dragway, and a
opportunity to Drive the Clarmo's Malibu. The Winner is Bruce MacEachern
and too say he, is Wife and Four Kids are excited would be putting it mildly.
*May Madness is upon with the
Malcolm Carpentry Opening Weekend only a few days down the road and one lucky
racer in the Precision Concrete Mulligan Race's is going to also take home this
trophy, and two tickets to any NHRA National Event they want. The Member Track
Madness Trophy will be a run off between the winner of Super Pro and the Winner
of Semi Pro much like what we do for King of the Track. So not only will the
winners be taking home some big money, but they will also have a chance for
something a little different.
*The boys of
summer will soon be hitting the track for the 2018 season, and with this past
Saturday being another test and t une
before opening weekend a number of the past champs where getting things ready.
Derek Malcolm, Kyle Jessup, Darryl Jensen, Troy Davis, Rai Pillwien, Dave
Rennie, Steve Ballantyne, and Albert Jerome all made numerous pass's sorting
things out. And for some it was a well worth while day as even the best laid
plans can hit a bump in the road, as it did for Derek Malcolm when a fuel line
fitting cracked and looked like it would keep him from getting ready. However
its nice when some racers live right next door to the track like Pat Alaire who
quickly jumped into action to come up with the fittings and a line to get last
years Track Champ up and running. For most this was a better test weekend, as
the track had its second weekend of cars on it and it showed with the drivers
who where making the test hits. After 6 and another great turnout of street cars
for our second cruise night of 2018 into the books on the positive side. |
OPENING WEEKEND
UPON US, A TRUE TEST OF THOSE THAT CARE: MAY 14/2018
Yes it's finally here, opening weekend. One of the things I have noticed over
the years, but have never commented on but believe that in this day and age of
tracks closing all over it was the perfect time to do so, is the many racers who
really care abou t
our sport, our track and not just themselves. You have to look no further than
those racers who have busted their butts to be ready for opening day, one of the
most important days of any racing season for any motorsports venue. These are
the race teams who want a local track an d they want the local track to be
successful and grow and will do everything they can to help that happen. Yes
there will be the odd person who has tried very hard and for some unforeseen
reason and something completely out of their control caused them not to be
there. But these are also the racers who will be there as spectators anyway.
Those that care about the future of Luskville Dragway
will be very evident by their involvement in this weekend's opening points race.
To those that support your local track, THANK YOU, Luskville Dragway is very fortunate to have as many loyal racers
as we do, and know that many race tracks don't have the support that ours does.

OUTAOUAIS WELDING & MACHINING BECOMES NEWEST
ADVERTISER: MAY 14/18
When any company
has been in business for 40 or more years, it immediately tells you they
must be doing an awful lot right. No one stays in business that many years
with out being very good at what they do, and that is the case of Outa ouais
Welding & Machining. Owned and operated by Rick Robert, who just happens to
be a car guy as well as the rest of us, Outaouais Welding has been taking
care of business in the Ottawa/Gatineau area for four decades and still
going strong. Why is that, well here is just a partial list of what they can
do for you, All type of welding (steel, Aluminum, Stainless), Mobile
welding, Cutting, Shearing and Bending, Trailer Fabrication & repair, Trailer Hitch installation, Line Boring, Machining, Snowplow
installation, Railings and staircases, Outdoor Fireplace Fabrication. So
this gives you and idea of how diversified this company is and is probably a
great reason why they have been so successful. As mentioned earlier Rick has
always loved cars and is very excited about being involved with the ultimate
cars when in comes to speed, Drag Cars. Outaouais Welding and Machining is
Located at 141 Rue Jean-Proulx, Gatineau, Quebec J8Z 1T4. |
BITS
FROM THE PITS: MAY 7/18 *We didn't call it
Test and tune for nothing this past Saturday, as everyone was te sted
on patience and dedication to Luskville Dragway. With nothing but bad weather
for the first two pre season Test and Tune days behind us, and nothing but
sunshine predicted for this past Saturday everyone was excited about getting
going finally. HOWEVER, Mother Nature once again showed who was always in
charge, as High winds after the storm front went through on Friday reeked havoc
on the Hydro supply for everyone including Luskville Dragway. So has fire up
time approached we where still being told hydro was
doing
their best to get power back on to us, and thousands others. But not taking any
chances the boys with the help of a number of racers who loaned generators where
ready to go with portable power, but as you would expect Hydro came through and
we where back to normal. But that was all that was normal about the rest of the
day and night, as a record number of entree's made 2018 the ever first weekend
in 40 years. A number full tilt race cars where including Dave Rennie, Darryl
Jensen, Albert Jerome, Rai and Dan Pillwien, Larry Whitty and Jake Gravel. The
big numbers came in street cars, and some very, very fast ones to say the least,
yes if the first weekend is an indication of the support that is there for
Luskville Dragway, then we will be around for a long, long time, keep it up.
*We
thought this would be a nice addition to the Dave Rennie Autocare story this
week, as we go way back to the early eighties and a custom car show we did at the
Congress Centre right down t own. How long ago was it, well you can see by the
old original Luskville Dragway Logo, and Dave's original 72 Vega, it was a long, long time ago. We have
pretty much done them all though, from car shows and car displays in Toronto, Montreal,
Sault St. Marie, Sudbury as well as every single one that has taken place in
Ottawa. And through all those years we have had the support and help of many
great race teams, such as Dave and Pam Rennie back then. The congress center was
one of the more difficult set ups, as we had to take the cars up floors in a
elevator, but we got er done. It was only a one time deal at the congress center
but we are talking with the new car show people about possibly being part of
their show next year at that same venue, time will tell.
*Just a reminder to all
competitors, we will be
doing
tech on cars on time trial weekends, so if you want to get it done before
opening weekend just let us know you will be there and we will bring forms. If
not we will be doing an open tech inspection early Saturday & Sunday Morning's
May 19-20, also want to remind everyone once again that if you require SFI on
your chassis Steve Lecour from NHRA will be present Sunday May 20th to take care
of that as well. This has nothing to do with our home track tech inspection
what's so ever. As a follow up to this, Paolo and Shannon Giust will have their
Corvette Pro Mod at Luskville Dragway opening weekend, a great chance for
everyone to see one of the fastest Pro Mods in North America.
*Just a reminder we will be
open this coming weekend for our last pre season test and tune, as well as a
cruise night Saturday Night. Last week was a very good turnout and we hope we
can keep the momentum going as we kick it into high gear for this summer. Spread
the word, support you local track so you always have one. |
DAVE RENNIE AUTOCARE JOINS THE LONG LIST OF LUSKVILLE DRAGWAY
SUPPORTERS: MAY 7/18 There
has
been plenty of excitement surrounding the return of Dave Rennie to the drag
racing wars, and too say he has been a busy man since making the decision to
get back into the sport. Buying a race car, buying a trailer, completely
updating the car to fit his likes, painting it to reflect the car he had
when he quit drag racing ove r three decades ago. But even though he has been
run off his feet getting things done, Dave and his wife Pam took enough time
out of their busy schedule to realize they also wanted to do what they could
to help the track move forward as well. So with that in mind it is with
great pleasure we announce that Dave Rennie Autocare is the latest MAJOR
Advertiser to sign a marketing partnership with Luskville Dragway. Dave
Rennie Autocare will hold the title rights to the newest race on the 2018
Schedule, the Bracket Bonanza Warm Up Race Saturday July 28th. This means
that Super Pro and Semi Pro will running for guaranteed payouts making it so
they can win enough money to pay for their Bracket Bonanza weekend in style.
Dave Rennie Autocare is a full line Automotive General Repair with a flair for
performance obviously, But no matter what the team is working on it gets major
detail every time. After taking your ride for repairs or service to this shop
you will not go anywhere else guaranteed. |

ELLIOTT LAKE CELEBRATES 19 YEARS AND LOOKS TOWARDS 20: MAY 7/18
With the announcement this week of the confirmation by the city council of
Elliott Lake that the 2018 North Shore Challenge would go forward. Now
don't take this wrong, we still have to work real hard to make this
event the huge success like it has always been, but the vote of confidence by the
officials should make everyone very, very happy. Started back in 1999 the
year 2019 will mark the 20TH. anniversary of this very special event that has
taken place in the middle of July for all of these years. I can only imagine
what will take place that year. This race is also the kick off event for the
long standing Bracket Racing Series the Napa Auto Parts Show Me the Money
Tour, the longest running series in Canada.
I still remember as if it was yesterday, my first trip ever to Elliot Lake
in the fall of 1998, to meet with people like Bruno Serre, Jack Bourget and
William Elliott, people that too this day play a big part in the
continuation and the success of this race. Our first trip to Elliott Lake
was a very special one, and too this day it is a road trip that we all
anxiously wait for each and every year, as this is a very special weekend for
all of us that travel the Napa Auto Parts Tour. From its very first year to
this day, to watch how the city, the city employee's, the business's and the
people of this incredibly beautiful City welcome the racing community is
quite simply amazing. The memories and the traditions are etched in stone,
whether it be something as simple as the ADM Teams annual pool hall trip, to
the annual staff dinner at the Fireside, and the list goes on and on, and
that is before you even reach the race track. The race track has created so
many memories as well for race teams, who would have known that way back
when Jamie Tupper would win his first big dollar race at Elliott Lake, in a
Buick Door Car, that he would go on to be one of the winningest and greatest
Bracket Racers of all time in Canada. Or how about the year the small fair
and Ferris wheels where part of the race, the view from the starting line
with the rides going on was something I personally will never forget and for
me is the one thing I remember with great fondness. So as we look down the
road to July 13-14-15 and even further down the road to the 20th Annual in
2019, I think that anyone and everyone who has ever been part of this event
will rejoice, and for anyone that has never been, please make plans to be
part of Drag Racing History in Canada. |
